Growing up in Minnesota, my dad took my brothers and I on annual camping trips into the Boundary Waters Wilderness during the Summer. These trips are some of my most cherished memories. There is one that is particularly vivid: We had just portaged past a rather picturesque waterfall when my dad stopped and said something that has resonated with me ever since. After a deep inhale, taking in as much fresh Boundary Waters air as possible, he exhaled and quietly declared, "this is my sanctuary".

Hearing those words unveiled to me, for the first time, the power and importance of the great outdoors. That moment sparked a love for nature that would grow over many years and eventually evolve into Abode Outside.

The Evolution

Following graduation from college, I immersed myself in the outdoors. I moved to Colorado, helped manage a shoe store and spent as much time as possible camping, hiking, paddling, snowboarding and sleeping in tents. In 2012, I obtained certification as a wilderness first responder giving me the confidence and skills to venture deeper into the wilderness. In 2018 I studied sustainable fashion through the London College of fashion. This experience convinced me the clothing industry played an important role in improving environmental health, and shortly after that, I developed the idea for Abode Outside. With the support of family and friends, we launched in 2020.

My Dad deserves most of the credit for Abode Outside, because I am confident it wouldn't exist without him and those childhood trips into the Boundary Waters.

The rest of the credit belongs to my mother, my brothers, my wife Crystal, our friends Kelly, Steve, Shallon and our manufacturing team who all feel like family at this point, after many years of working together, even before Abode Outside existed. I have a talented circle of family and friends with critical business skills and knowledge, and I couldn’t do it without them. It takes a team to create something exceptional, and that's what we are doing at Abode Outside.
